How to Launch a Web Site

Step 6: Improve Your Google Rank

<<< Step 5 |  Step 7 >>>

Being "In" Isn't Enough

OK, so there are ways to get into Google's index quickly (as outlined in Step 4), but you still need a higher page rank. And the only real way to get that is through some hard work-- you have to impress Google.

You do that in four ways:

  1. Add new, real content to your site every day.
Google places a higher value on sites that have a lot of fresh content.

  2. Submit your site to all of the appropriate categories in DMOZ.
Since the Open Directory Project is human-edited, Google figures if they let you in, you're alright!

  3. Ask other sites to link to yours.
Find sites that share something with yours and ask them to exchange links with you. Do at least five of these a week. And don't get discouraged if most don't even answer you-- because some will. Not only will these sites generate traffic to your site, Google will find the links to your page when they spider the other site, and decide that your web site has just a little more value.

  4. Add new, real content to your site every day.
    I can't emphasize this enough!

Better get started! If you want more in-depth information on how to use Google to your advantage, please read Google Hacks from O'Reilly.
