How to Launch a Web Site

Step 1: Get a Domain Name

<<< Tutorial Menu |  Step 2 >>>

If you want to create a unique and distinctive presence on the web, there's no substitute for having your own domain name. It's easy to get and keep one, and it's cheap. You may think that you can always get a domain name later, but every day that passes os an opportunity for someone else to get your name first.

Pick whatever you really want! There are some simple guidelines:

  • Don't make it too long (some could argue that lunchwithgeorge.com is too long, but it works!)

  • Avoid abbreviations - it's better to spell words out so the site is easily remembered.

If you think you know the domain name you want, just use the search box below and see if it is available! Enter the name you desire and select a suffix (e.g., ".com"). When you hit the SEARCH button, you'll be taken to my favorite domain registrar, Domain Direct (all of my domain names are registered through them). They'll tell you if your name is available, and if not, they'll also suggest a list of available names which are similar.

If you decide to register with them, I know you won't be sorry. But there are a lot of domain registration companies out there, and I'm sure many of them are top-notch.
