Lunch With George!

Join the LWG SETI@Home Team!

Arecibo Radio Telescope, Puerto Rico (305m in diameter)
Here's a chance to put your computer's idle CPU hours to use! The SETI@Home project takes recordings of data collected by listening at specific radio frequencies using radio telescopes (most notably the large radio telescope at Arecibo, Puerto Rico) and studying the data for patterns which might be artificial in origin.

Participants in the project download work packets, which are analyzed by the client software when you aren't using your computer. The analysis is uploaded to SETI@Home, which then gives you another packet, and so on.

If you join the Lunch With George! team, we can work together and be recognized for our efforts as a group, as well as individually.

What is SETI?

SETI stands for "Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence". It is an on-going effort to enthusiastically answer "YES" to the question "Is there anyone out there?" For more information, visit the
SETI Institute Site and the SERENDIP Project site.

How Do I Participate?

You need to download the client software for your particular computer, install it, and run it. When it runs for the first time, it will prompt you for new account information, and then connect to the SETI@Home site to register you and download your first work unit of data.

Here are the steps:

  1. Visit the SETI@Home Download Page.
  2. Locate and download the client software for your particular platform.
  3. Once the file is on your computer, unzip/unstuff/untar it.
  4. Run the installer (it may require you to retsart your computer).
  5. Run the SETI@Home program!
  6. Choose to create a new user profile
  7. Enter your nickname, your e-mail address, and anything else it asks for.
  8. Hit SUBMIT. At this point, it will connect via the internet, register you, and download your first work unit.
  9. You are now searching for little green men (and women)!

How Do I join the LWG Team?

That's easy! You just need to visit the SETI@Home site, locate our team page, and join. Here's how:

  1. Visit the Lunch With George! Team page.
  2. Select the "Join" link.
  3. SETI@Home will ask for your e-mail and password... but what is your password??? Just click on the "Have you forgotten your password?" link and they will send your password to you at your specified e-mail address. THEN enter it on the web page.
  4. That's it! You're a member of the Lunch With George! team.

Browse around the SETI@Home site-- they offer lots of statistics that are interesting. Running the screen saver (or the client) is also interesting to watch! Now I turn on my desktop the minute I get home to make sure I'm crunchin' those numbers.

If you have any questions, feel free to send me an e-mail at paul@lunchwithgeorge.com.
