THE COST OF THE WAR (So far)

Dollars

Current Cost of the War in Iraq
(JavaScript Error)
  • President Bush has asked Congress for $74.7 Billion for a 2-month war. The Congressional Budget Office estimate is around $135 Billion.

  • President Bush has asked Congress for an additional $87 Billion.

  • All of the money for the War on Terrorism is being borrowed, and the budget deficit for 2004 is a staggering $477 Billion (another Dubya all-time record). When added to the budget deficits of 2003 ($374.2) and 2002 ($158 billion), that's $1,009.2 Billion we now need to pay back... or, $3,451 per person (Census Bureau places the current US population at 292,392,432).

PAUL'S IRAQ WAR FACT SHEET

Things we know:

  1. President Bush's military action will kill an undetermined number of Iraqi women and children, as well as an undetermined number of young U.S. Men and Women serving in the armed forces.
  2. Attacking Iraq will result in greater risk of terrorist attacks on U.S. Soil (according to Homeland Security Secretary Ridge).
  3. Attacking Iraq is going to cost a lot of money (the CBO estimates a 2-month war would cost around $135 Billion), greatly increasing the national debt.

Questions left to be answered:

  1. Will Saddam use weapons of mass destruction against the U.S. troops or Israel?
  2. Will terrorists now get their weapons and support from Iran, Libya, or N. Korea?
  3. Will arabs in the region have a better or worse view of the United States?
  4. Will all of the major powers in the world (except the U.K. and Spain) have a better or worse view of the United States?
  5. Will arab extremists be more or less likely to overthrow their governments which are friendly with the U.S.?
  6. Will the overall standing of the U.S. in the world community be better or worse?
  7. Will iraqi citizens have a more or less favorable view of the United States?
  8. Will U.S. Citizens be more or less likely to be targets of terrorism?
  9. Will middle-East peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians be more or less likely?
  10. Are the Kurds of Northern Iraq more or less likely to continue their autonomy?

"Naturally, the common people don't want war, but after all it is the leaders of a country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag people along whether its a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship.

Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. This is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in every country."

-- Herman Goering, Hitler's Reich-Marshall at the Nuremberg Trials after WWII

The Iraqi People need help
Hunger and disease are threatening millions of Iraqis. Even before the war, 2/3 of Iraq's people were dependent on foreign food aid. This crucial food distribution system has now been severely disrupted. Iraq's fragile water and sewage systemsÊare also in jeopardy-- opening the door to possible epidemics of cholera and dysentery.

Oxfam is already in the region, working around the clock to set up crucial water and sanitation systems for fleeing refugees.
