Lunch With George!

Puzzle Contest

Yes, it's another new feature on Lunch With George!... The Lunch With George! Puzzle Contest. Every now and then, I'll post a puzzle here, and award an interesting item (a.k.a. the "Prize") to the person who solves it first!

Click here for the Contest Rules.

THE NEW PUZZLE

Entries must be received by 5:00pm April 29, 2002

(To see previous puzzles, see the Puzzle Archive.)

This is a trivia question... and still does not require a deck of cards.

After whom was Mount Everest named, and what was this person's connection to the mountain?

The correct answer:

Sir George Everest, India's Surveyor General.

Peak XV was identified as the world's tallest peak by a computer named Radhanath Sikdar in 1852. He reporting his findings to the chief of the Great Trigonometric Survey of India, surveyor General Sir Andrew Waugh. It was not until 1865 that Waugh named the mountain for his predecessor, Sir George Everest. Everest himself never even saw the mountain!.

The Winner: Fred!

We had two entries for this puzzle (and both were correct).

The PRIZE!

The winner of this contest will receive a copy of Into Thin Air, Jon Krakauer's gripping account of the 1996 Everest tragedy.

I will ship the book (at my expense) to the contest winner, unless it is easier to hand it to them.

Send your answer in an e-mail to: contest@lunchwithgeorge.com.
