Talking About Black Holes

  • Black Holes: Some Evidence
I found an interesting web article at SPACE.com which talk about possible diredct evidence for the existence of Black Holes. The article describes research by Joseph Dolan, of NASA's Goddard Spaceflight Center. He is searching for evidence not of the black hole itself, but rather of the event horizon. He is using observations of Cygnus XR-1 (an X-Ray-emitting object suspected of being a black hole) made by the Hubble Telescope, which show bright flashes of ultraviolet light which sputtered and then disappeared. He believes these might be the emissions from hot gasses spiraling into, and moving beyond, the event horizon.

  • Black Holes: An Overview
This article provides a brief overview of black holes, but I really like the Black Holes FAQ provided by the Center for Particle Physics! I haven't read it all yet, but I plan to do so.

  • Super-Massive Black Hole Observed?
Harvard's CHANDRA X-Ray Observatory site describes their observations which may indicate that a super-massive black hole does indeed inhabit the center of our galaxy.
